Beta Release for OpenStreetMap Data Launched!

We are excited to offer support for OpenStreetMap (OSM) content.

In keeping with the spirit of the OSM community, OSM data in deCarta format will be free of charge. There are two ways to access this content:

  1. All deCarta devZone developers have access to OSM content through deCarta API's by selecting the OSM service configuration.

  2. Developers can also download the data in deCarta's Rich Map eXchange (RMX) format from the FAQ section.

OSM data combined with deCarta API's offer a very rich feature set that enables the developers to develop interesting, sticky applications. Check out these screenshots that show some of the best OSM content using deCarta API's. The beta release is aimed at developers who want to develop the following types of applications:

  • Map display

  • Vehicle tracking

Beta release gives developers access to selected areas worldwide. Product launch in October 2009 will include support for the complete worldwide coverage of OSM.

Additional development is under way that will enable developers to develop applications for:

  • Pedestrian routing

  • High-level routing

Future product releases will include support for local search and turn-by-turn navigation based on availability and applicability of the OSM content. In addition, deCarta will expand geographic coverage and depth of features as the OSM data continues to expand and mature.

Check out our FAQ section for more details on this exciting new product.

OpenStreetMap is a voluntary not-for-profit organization that anyone, anywhere can join. The goal of OSM is to provide free maps that can be used by anyone. All of their maps are freely available on the internet at www.openstreetmap.org.

 Guide for the impatient

  1. Read through API documentation (JavaScript, Web Services and Mobile API). Live examples only work for approved developers. Additionally, you can download the client package and edit the config file with your Web Services username and password and begin building your application.

  2. Prefer XML-over-HTTP? Check out Web Services and start using your favorite programming language, such as Java, .NET, Ruby, Python, or others. Documentation is provided. Approved developers can use the XML tester to send and receive XML for testing. Download the client package for the XML and begin using the web services right away using your Web Services username and password.

  3. Got questions? Ask them in the forums.
